Community Tensions Rise in Ekwenu Over Disputed Traditional Ruler Certification

A controversy has erupted in Ekwenu Autonomous Community following the alleged certification of Chief Chinwe Eze as their Traditional Ruler (Igwe). In a strongly worded letter to the Executive Chairman of Udenu Local Government Area, Akachukwu Eze Akachukwu, Leaders of the Community have expressed their unequivocal rejection of the purported certification, citing violations of democratic and traditional norms.

The letter, signed by a coalition of Community stakeholders, alleges that the certification of Chief Chinwe disregards the collective will of the people and violates a standing court injunction prohibiting any actions regarding the installation of a Traditional Ruler pending the resolution of legal proceedings. The Community has been without a Traditional Ruler for 17 years, not due to a lack of interest, but because of protracted disputes and what they describe as “manipulative attempts” by Chief Eze to secure the position unopposed.

The letter also alleges that a recent visit by representatives of the Enugu State Government, ostensibly organized to distribute palliatives, was exploited by Chief Eze and his associates to stage a “deceptive installation” as Igwe. This maneuver reportedly caused outrage among Community members, who see it as a betrayal of the principles of transparency, fairness, and unity.

“We consider this act a gross violation of the people’s will,” the letter reads. “Chief Eze’s actions not only undermine the integrity of our traditional institution but also threaten to further divide an already tense Community.”

The concerned citizens have laid out specific demands for the Udenu LGA Chairman to address the issue, including:

1. Calling Chief Chinwe Eze to order: The community wants an unequivocal directive barring Chief Eze and his associates from further self-proclamation as Igwe.

2. Revoking the purported certification: They demand that no recognition be accorded to Chief Eze without a proper community-driven selection process.

3. Investigating the government visit: The letter calls for an inquiry into the alleged misuse of the State Government’s palliative distribution program for political manipulation.

4. Facilitating a transparent selection process: They urge the Chairman to ensure that the choice of a Traditional Ruler aligns with the customs and traditions of Ekwenu.

The position of Igwe in Ekwenu has been vacant since 2007, a gap attributed to internal disputes and allegations of political interference. Chief Chinwe Eze has reportedly made multiple attempts over the years to secure the stool, but his bids have consistently been met with resistance from significant segments of the community.

“The office of the Honourable Commissioner for Local Government, Rural Development, and Chieftaincy Matters should not be used by some elements to cause social injustice in our community,” the letter asserts.

The petitioners are now seeking the urgent intervention of Akachukwu Eze to prevent further escalation of tensions. “We trust in your ability to address this matter promptly and justly,” the letter concludes, expressing hope that the Chairman will use his good offices to restore peace and order.

As of the time of this report, neither the Udenu Local Government Chairman nor Chief Chinwe Eze has issued a formal response to the allegations. However, Community members are reportedly planning peaceful demonstrations to underscore their opposition to the purported certification.

This incident underscores the delicate balance between tradition, governance, and the rule of law in local communities, raising broader questions about the processes for selecting traditional rulers in contemporary society.
