Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State took a significant step towards improving sanitation and hygiene on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, as it hosted an elaborate Sanitation Sensitization Program at the Multipurpose Hall of the Udenu Local Government Secretariat. The event, organized by the Local Government Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) program officers, attracted key stakeholders from across the state, including the Managing Director of the Enugu State WASH Program, Chika Mbah.

The sensitization program aimed to reinforce public commitment to sanitation standards and hygiene improvement at the grassroots level. During the event, stakeholders delivered goodwill messages and commitment statements, emphasizing the necessity of maintaining proper sanitation facilities across the LGA.

The highlights of the program included several resolutions aimed at strengthening sanitation compliance, including:

Mandatory Toilet Facilities: All households, markets, restaurants, and filling stations must have properly built toilets.

Community-Based Sensitization: Immediate commencement of public awareness campaigns at the village level.

The Neighbourhood Watch security outfit will be engaged to ensure compliance and apprehend defaulters.

Councillors, Presidents-General (PGs) of Town Unions, and Traditional Rulers will lead sensitization efforts in their respective communities.

The Chairman of Udenu LGA, Aka Eze Aka, reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sanitation improvements. He pledged to intensify efforts to ensure that toilet facilities are provided in all markets within the LGA.

In a bold move to enhance accessibility, the Chairman also announced plans to procure and subsidize mobile lavatory accessories, making them affordable for residents and business owners. This initiative is expected to provide immediate relief to areas lacking adequate sanitation facilities.

Speaking at the event, Aka Eze emphasized the importance of a clean and healthy environment, noting that proper sanitation is not only a public health necessity but also a fundamental aspect of community development.

Other notable figures present at the event included Onyekachi C. Ugwu, who accompanied the Chairman, alongside representatives from various local government departments, community leaders, and WASH officials.

Stakeholders expressed their collective commitment to ensuring the full implementation of the resolutions reached at the meeting. The Enugu State WASH Managing Director, Chika Mbah, commended the Udenu LGA for taking proactive steps toward addressing sanitation challenges, urging all communities to embrace the initiative wholeheartedly.

As part of the follow-up measures, the WASH officers will work closely with Community Leaders to ensure that the resolutions are implemented effectively. Residents, market traders, and business owners have been urged to cooperate with the sanitation guidelines, as strict enforcement measures will be put in place to penalize defaulters.

The event marks a pivotal moment in Udenu’s sanitation efforts, reflecting the Local Government’s resolve to create a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment for all residents. With Traditional Rulers, Councillors, and Town Union Leaders fully involved, the initiative is expected to achieve widespread compliance across the LGA.

The Udenu Local Government leadership has assured the public that it will continue to prioritize sanitation and hygiene as part of its broader development agenda. The move aligns with Enugu State Government and Gov. Peter Mbah’s commitment to achieving Open Defecation Free (ODF) status and improving public health outcomes.

Residents are encouraged to support the initiative by adopting proper hygiene practices and ensuring their environments remain clean and safe for all.
