The Joint National Association of Persons With Disabilities (JONAPWD), Udenu Chapter, yesterday marked the International Day for People With Disabilities (IDPD) at the Udenu Local Government Secretariat in Obollo Afor, Enugu State. The event highlighted the need for inclusivity and equal opportunities for persons living with disabilities.
The celebration, which drew significant attention, was attended by the Chairman of Udenu Local Government Area, Aka Eze Aka, a known advocate and long-standing friend of the physically challenged. The Chairman was ably represented by his Chief of Staff, Dr. Okwudili Jude Ukwueze, and the Secretary to the Local Government (SLG), Rt. Hon. Chika Aroh.
In a show of support, Aka donated essential walking aids, including wheelchairs and crutches, to the Association. This gesture was warmly received by the leadership and members of JONAPWD, as it underscored the Local Government’s commitment to improving the lives of persons with disabilities.
The Udenu Chapter of JONAPWD was led at the event by its Chairperson, Mrs. Ngozi Eze. In attendance also was the Enugu State President of the Association Mr. Onyebuchi Mbah. In their separate addresses, they emphasized the importance of societal inclusivity and called on relevant stakeholders to champion policies that integrate persons with disabilities into every facet of public life.
“The theme for this year’s celebration is particularly significant as it reminds us that inclusivity is not a privilege but a right. Every individual, regardless of physical ability, deserves to be included in decision-making, employment opportunities, education, and community development,” Mrs. Eze remarked.
It will be recalled that on October 17, this year, the leadership of JONAPWD Udenu Chapter paid an advocacy visit to Aka Eze Aka, during which they presented the challenges faced by their members and appealed for sustained government intervention.
Responding on behalf of the Udenu LGA Chairman, Rt. Hon. Aroh reiterated the council’s commitment to supporting the physically challenged in the Area. He assured the group that the council would continue to prioritize their welfare and address their concerns within available resources.
The event served as both a celebration and a platform for advocacy, highlighting the need for an inclusive society that values the contributions and rights of people with disabilities. Members of JONAPWD expressed appreciation for the support received and urged for continued collaboration between Governments authorities and Disability groups.
The International Day for People With Disabilities, observed globally on December 3rd, serves as an important reminder of the need to build inclusive, accessible, and equitable communities for all. The Udenu Chapter’s celebration further underscored the role of Local Governments and stakeholders in promoting these ideals.
The event concluded with the presentation of the donated walking aids to the beneficiaries, symbolizing hope and progress for persons living with disabilities in Udenu.
