Mbu Akpoti Community in Enugu State witnessed a momentous occasion as Most Rev. Prof. Godfrey Igwebuike Onah, the Catholic Bishop of Nsukka Diocese, concluded a two-day pastoral visit to St. Michael’s Parish on Saturday, January 18, 2025. The highlight of the visit was a Pontifical High Mass held at the parish center, which began at 10:00 AM local time.
During the Mass, 420 parishioners received the Sacrament of Confirmation, marking a significant milestone in their spiritual journey. This sacrament, a cornerstone of Catholic faith, bestows the recipients with the Holy Spirit to strengthen their resolve and commitment to Christ.
In his homily, Bishop Onah delivered a profound message rooted in scripture, combining the parable of the sower from the Gospel of St. Matthew with the prophetic declaration of “dry bones shall rise again” from Isaiah. He encouraged the congregation to embrace the transformative power of God’s word, rise above life’s challenges, and exemplify true Christian living.
The Pontifical Mass was concelebrated by about 20 priests, including notable clerics such as Rev. Fr. Dr. Celestine Ngwoke, Dean of Ikem Deanery; Rev. Fr. Jude Eze, Dean of Obollo Eke Deanery; Rev. Fr. Otikpo, Assistant Diocesan Secretary; and Very Rev. Fr. Paul Nwonu, Parish Priest of St. Mary’s Parish, Ada Agu.
Bishop Onah’s visit commenced on Friday, January 17, 2025, with a tour of the parish’s outstations. This gave him an opportunity to meet with parishioners, deliver catechesis, and offer moral and spiritual guidance. The Bishop’s direct engagement with the community underscored his commitment to fostering faith and unity within the diocese.
Following the Holy Mass, the parish hosted a grand reception featuring cultural dances, heartfelt welcome songs, insightful addresses, and refreshments. The event was an expression of gratitude and joy, with the community presenting gifts to the Bishop as tokens of appreciation for his dedicated service to the diocese.
Rev. Fr. Centus Okpe, the Parish Priest of the Parish, expressed profound gratitude to God, the Bishop, the Organizing Committee, the parish council, and all individuals whose contributions ensured the success of the event.
In his closing remarks, Bishop Onah commended Fr. Centus Okpe for his exceptional leadership and pastoral dedication, which have significantly impacted the parish community. He also extended his heartfelt appreciation to the parishioners for their hospitality and vibrant display of faith.
The event was graced by several dignitaries, including Hon. Solomon Onah, Member representing Udenu Constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly; Chuma Emmanuel Onah, Barr. Onyeka Ugwuanyi, Chief Anselm Onah (Onwa), Registrar of SUMAS; Prof. Festus Agbo; and Chief Mrs. Basil Ugwuagbo, President General of Mbu Akpoti Town Union.
This two-day pastoral visit by Most Rev. Onah was the first of its kind in the annals of the Parish, and will be remembered as a period of renewal, unity, and celebration in the Community.
