GLORIOUS EXIT AT 102: Late Damian Ezeabugwu’s Family Announces Burial of Their Matriarch

— Preparations in top gear as Central Planning Committee mobilizes Subcommittees

The family of the Late Mr. Damian Ezeabugwu of Akanugu, Obollo Etiti in Udenu Local Government Area, Enugu State, has formally announced the funeral rites of their matriarch, Late Mrs. Ezinne Elizabeth Ezeh, fondly known as Obezi Umuagbara, who passed on peacefully at La Vera College Hospital Nsukka, on May 17, 2025 at the remarkable age of 102 years.
According to the official obituary announcement released by the family, the funeral ceremonies will commence with a Wake Keep by 5PM on Thursday, 24th July 2025 at her husband’s compound in Ada-Agu, Obollo Etiti, followed by the main burial and funeral events on Friday, 25th July 2025.

The program of events reveals that the body will depart Bishop Shanahan Hospital at 7:30 AM, arriving at her husband’s compound by 9:30 AM, where she will lie in state. A Requiem Mass, to be presided by His Lordship , Rt. Rev. Prof. Godfrey Onah, (the Father Bishop of Nsukka) will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Ada-Agu Obollo Etiti by 10:00 AM, followed immediately by interment and a grand reception at the family compound.

A fortnight ago, a Central Planning Committee, chaired by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Johnson Ogbonna, was inaugurated at the Ezeh family compound to oversee the planning and execution of the burial/funeral arrangements. The Committee is working under clearly defined terms of reference and has since swung into full gear.
The Planning Committee is subdivided into five active Subcommittees vis-a-viz Protocols, Publicity, Entertainment, Security, and Logistics, all chaired by respected Community Leaders and Professionals. Each Subcommittee is saddled with specific responsibilities and has commenced rigorous coordination to ensure a befitting farewell for the Centenarian matriarch.

The Late Ezinne Elizabeth Ezeh is survived by a prominent and widely respected lineage of seven children, who have distinguished themselves in public service, religious life, medicine, education, entrepreneurship, and international missions. Among her children are:
Hon. Innocent Ezeh, a former Chairman of Udenu Local Government Area, whose public service legacy remains evergreen in the Council.
Rev. Fr. Gabriel Ezeh, the Dean of Enugu Ezike Deanery, in the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, renowned for his spiritual leadership.
Mr. Cajethan Ezeh, a Banker and formerly of Anambra—Imo River Basin Development Authority.
Dr. Athanasius Ezeh, a seasoned Medical Doctor, Founder/CMD of Miracle Seed Hospital, Kubwa Abuja, with contributions to rural healthcare development.
High Chief Dr. Sir Anterus Ezeh, a former International Religious of the Oblates of St. Joseph Congregation, and Founder/Proprietor of La Vera College of Nursing Sciences and La Vera College Hospital Nsukka, two leading institutions shaping the future of healthcare in the State.

Their late father, Ichie Damian Ezeh, who passed away in 1989, was among the pioneer Catholic Christians in Obollo land and a man of enviable character and reputation.

With preparations in full swing and a high-powered Planning Committee coordinating events, the community of Obollo Etiti and indeed the wider Udenu LGA and Nsukka Zone are expected to turn out in large numbers to honour the late matriarch.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Hon. Innocent Ezeh, one of the sons, expressed gratitude to all well-wishers and friends of the family for their overwhelming support and prayers.
He noted that the family is committed to giving their mother a celebration of life, befitting her age and legacy.
