La Vera College of Nursing Sciences, Nsukka, has taken another significant step toward expanding its academic offerings following the inspection of its facilities by a high-powered delegation from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).
The inspection visit, which took place on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, formed part of the formal accreditation process for the institution’s transition to a Higher National Diploma (HND) awarding institution in nursing education.
The NBTE delegation toured the College’s academic and administrative facilities to assess its level of preparedness and compliance with the standards required for institutions seeking approval to award Higher National Diplomas.
The team was received and guided around the campus by the Provost of the College, the Registrar, and a representative of the Governing Board, Hon. Innocent Ezeh. During the inspection, the delegation visited the institution’s lecture halls, demonstration rooms, administrative units, and student facilities. They also inspected the institution’s affiliate Healthcare facility, La Vera College Hospital and Diagnostics Ltd, Nsukka, which serves as the clinical training hub for students of the College.
The visit by the NBTE followed an earlier assessment by officials from the Enugu State Ministry of Education, who had previously inspected the institution and confirmed that it met the required standards for the provision of advanced academic and professional training.
The delegation commended the College’s management for its professionalism, attention to regulatory requirements, and commitment to maintaining high academic standards.
La Vera College of Nursing Sciences holds a unique position in the South East, as the first privately owned institution of its kind within the Enugu North Senatorial Zone. The College was fully accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) in 2024, paving the way for it to commence academic activities shortly thereafter.
Following its accreditation, the institution admitted its pioneer students and held its first matriculation ceremony in September 2025, marking the formal commencement of its academic journey.
Since then, the College has continued to expand its facilities and academic programs in line with global best practices in nursing and midwifery education.
During the inspection, the NBTE team was shown several modern facilities designed to support effective learning and professional training. These include spacious lecture halls, fully equipped demonstration laboratories for practical nursing education, and an elegant administrative complex designed to support efficient institutional operations.
The institution also boasts an ultramodern auditorium with a seating capacity of more than 350 persons, which serves as a venue for academic events, conferences, and seminars.
In addition, La Vera College provides comfortable residential accommodation for students through its 180-room en-suite hostel facility, designed to create a conducive learning and living environment within the campus.
Another critical component of the institution’s training structure is its affiliate healthcare facility, La Vera College Hospital and Diagnostics Ltd, Nsukka. The multidisciplinary hospital provides clinical training opportunities for students while also delivering healthcare services to the surrounding community.
The hospital is fully accredited and approved by the Enugu State Ministry of Health. It is also recognized by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) for meeting the operational and service standards required for healthcare providers under the national insurance program.
Management of the college explained that the hospital’s integration with the academic institution provides students with hands-on clinical exposure, allowing them to combine theoretical knowledge with practical experience, which is an essential component of modern nursing education.
Observers within the education and healthcare sectors note that the expansion of the college into an HND-awarding institution would further strengthen the supply of highly trained nursing professionals in Nigeria, particularly in the South-East region.
Nigeria continues to face increasing demand for qualified healthcare professionals due to population growth, expanding healthcare needs, and the global mobility of medical personnel. Institutions like La Vera College of Nursing Sciences are therefore seen as critical contributors to addressing the country’s healthcare workforce gap.
By pursuing HND accreditation, the institution aims to deepen the academic training of its students while aligning its programs with national technical education frameworks.
