Today marked a significant political development poised to reshape the political dynamics of Udenu Local Government Area and Enugu State at large, as members of various opposition parties on Tuesday officially defected to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The well-attended rally, held at the Udenu Local Government Council Headquarters in Obollo-Afor, was a milestone for the PDP as it continues to consolidate its grassroots support base ahead of future political contests.

Among the decampees were influential members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party (LP), and other opposition platforms, who cited the inclusive governance style and developmental strides of the Enugu State Governor, by His Excellency Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, and the Udenu Local Government Chairman, Aka Eze Aka, as key motivations for their realignment with the PDP.

The occasion was marked by an atmosphere of unity and optimism, symbolized by the metaphorical rejoining of “hands once parted.” It was a political homecoming that saw former rivals embrace a common cause for the advancement of Udenu.

Prominent among the defectors was Hon. Obinna Ijere, a former member of the Enugu State House of Assembly, on the platform of LP, who was formally presented with a PDP membership card by the party’s leadership. Speaking at the ceremony, Ijere described his defection as “a reaffirmation of belief in a party that has consistently delivered on the promise of good governance.” He praised the leadership of Governor Mbah and Chairman Aka Eze Aka, noting their visionary approaches to infrastructure, education, and grassroots development.

Also present at the event was the former Labour Party Governorship candidate in the 2023 general elections, Hon. Chijioke Edoga, who reassured his former supporters that the decision to join PDP was a strategic and principled one. “We are not just joining a party; we are joining a movement for the greater good of Ndi Udenu and Enugu State,” Edoga said. He expressed confidence in the PDP’s capacity to deepen democratic dividends and foster inclusive development.

The PDP leadership, represented by top stakeholders including the LGA Chairman, Aka Eze, and his Deputy, Hon. Mrs. Onyinye Odoh, the Chairman of the Party in Udenu, Hon. Meletus Onah (fondly called State), Ward leaders, and former Lawmakers, welcomed the new members with open arms and reaffirmed the Party’s commitment to unity and internal democracy. In his remarks, Aka Eze Aka described the defections as “a clear evidence of the credibility and impact of PDP-led governance in Enugu State,” noting that the party remains the most organized and development-oriented platform in the region.

“This is not just about numbers,” the Chairman stated. “It’s about building a broad-based political family united by patriotism, and a commitment to the common good.”

Also present at the event were key Stakeholders including the Leader of Udenu Legislative Council, Rt. Hon. Patrick Ugwu, as well as other Councillors. Among the principal aids of the Chairman who are present are: Maduka Abonyi, SPA Political Matters, Onyekachi C. Ugwu SPA Special Duties, Dr. Jude Ukwueze, the Chief of Staff to the Chairman, Rt. Hon. Chika Aroh, the Secretary to the Local Government.

The importance of this political realignment cannot be overstated. At a time when Nigeria’s political landscape is evolving rapidly, grassroots mobilization remains a critical component of electoral success. Udenu LGA, a pivotal constituency in Enugu North Senatorial District, now stands as a stronger fortress for the PDP, with renewed energy and wider representation across its political wards.

Political analysts believe that the mass defection is likely to shift the balance of political power in Enugu North, strengthening PDP’s electoral prospects in future Local and State elections.
