Tragedy struck in the early hours of today in Umajavu clan, Umuezejor, Obollo Afor, Udenu Local Government Area of Enugu State, when a massive fire outbreak razed a four-bedroom flat belonging to Mr. Dominic Odoh. The inferno, which started around 1:00 AM, claimed the life of one of Mr. Odoh’s twin sons, Arinze Odoh, and left the other critically injured.
The injured child is currently receiving treatment at Grace Wellness Hospital, Iheakpu Obollo Afor. Dr. Solomon Idoko, the Medical Director of the Hospital, confirmed that the victim is responding well to treatment, raising hopes for recovery.
The deceased twin, Arinze, was burnt beyond recognition and was buried much later after the incident. The fire destroyed the entire building, consuming all the family’s valuables, with losses roughly estimated at over five million Naira.
Mr. Dominic Odoh, a businessman based in Otukpa, Ogbadigbo Local Government Area of Benue State, has been thrown into mourning alongside his family, who are now grappling with the catastrophic aftermath.
The Chairman of Udenu Local Government Area, Hon. Aka Eze Aka, was among the first sympathizers to visit the scene. Visibly shaken by the magnitude of the tragedy, Aka extended his condolences to the bereaved family and expressed concern about the devastating impact of the incident.
In a show of solidarity, the Mayor visited Grace Wellness Hospital at Iheakpu, where he met with the Medical Director, Dr. Solomon, and the injured twin. Assuring the victim of the support of the Udenu people, he pledged the government’s commitment to the family during this trying period.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, but investigations are ongoing. Aka Eze Aka has called on the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to provide immediate assistance to the family and take measures to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
Speaking to reporters, the Chairman emphasized the importance of determining the root cause of the fire to avert such tragedies, adding that proactive measures and public awareness could play a significant role in minimizing fire-related disasters, especially this dry season.
The incident has sparked an outpouring of sympathy from residents and community members, who have been rallying to support the Odoh family. Many have called on government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and philanthropists to assist the family in rebuilding their lives.
The tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the importance of fire safety and the need for community vigilance to prevent such heartbreaking incidents in the future.
