The immediate past Governor of Enugu State, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, has been bestowed with the prestigious Papal Knighthood of St. Gregory the Great, a significant honor recognizing his exceptional service to the Catholic Church and society at large. The solemn investiture ceremony took place at the Holy Ghost Cathedral, Enugu, during a Pontifical High Mass presided over by His Lordship, Rt. Rev. Dr. Callistus Onaga, the Catholic Bishop of Enugu.
The Papal Knighthood of St. Gregory, one of the highest honors conferred by the Holy See, is reserved for individuals who have demonstrated extraordinary dedication, moral leadership, and service to humanity. Rt. Hon. Ugwuanyi was praised for his humane nature during his tenure as governor, particularly for his integrity in governance and his refusal to manipulate election results, even when they did not favor his political aspirations.
In his homily, Bishop Onaga lauded Ugwuanyi’s leadership, emphasizing his commitment to justice, humility, and selflessness, which resonate deeply with the values of the Catholic Church. The Bishop further commended him for fostering peace and development in Enugu State during his administration, describing him as a “man of great moral fortitude and faith.”
The event attracted a gathering of notable dignitaries, friends, and well-wishers who came to celebrate this remarkable milestone in Ugwuanyi’s life. Among the attendees was Hon. Solomon Izuchukwu Onah, a member of the Enugu State House of Assembly representing Udenu Constituency, as well as other prominent figures in politics, the clergy, and the wider community.
During the ceremony, Ugwuanyi was adorned with the armor and regalia of the Commandery, symbolizing his induction into the Order of St. Gregory. The Papal honor underscores the Holy See’s acknowledgment of his contributions to the Church and society, particularly his dedication to ethical governance and public service.
