The University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN) has announced plans to demolish shanties and other unauthorised structures within and around its campus as part of efforts to restore its original master plan.

The Chairman of the Vice-Chancellor’s Committee on Restoration of the UNN Master Plan, Dr Okey Ekwelem, disclosed this on Tuesday in Nsukka while briefing journalists. He said the exercise is aimed at promoting environmental order and aligning the institution with global best practices.

According to Ekwelem, owners of shops attached to the university’s perimeter fences, as well as occupants of illegal structures within the campus, had earlier been directed to vacate or face demolition. He added that the university had issued prior notices, with deadlines later extended to allow for compliance.

“The demolition of all illegal structures situated inside and around the university fences will commence from May 6,” he said, adding that the measure is part of a broader plan to restore green areas and improve the campus environment.

Ekwelem explained that the administration of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simon Ortuanya, is committed to maintaining a serene and orderly environment befitting a world-class institution. He appealed to affected individuals to cooperate with the exercise in the interest of safety and sustainable development.

He further disclosed that designated areas have been provided within the university for legitimate commercial activities, urging business owners to relocate to approved locations.
