The Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Professor Simon Ortuanya, has reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to strengthening academic and innovation partnerships with Sweden following a diplomatic visit by the Swedish Ambassador to Nigeria, Anna Westerholm.
Westerholm led a delegation of embassy officials and Swedish business leaders to the university’s Enugu Campus, where discussions focused on expanding exchange programmes, joint research, institutional partnerships and innovation-driven collaborations. The meeting held at the Faculty of Law Boardroom, Enugu Campus of the University.

Professor Ortuanya said the engagement aligns with the university’s renewed internationalisation drive and ongoing efforts to broaden global partnerships.
“We are delighted to receive this distinguished delegation. Our goal is to position the University of Nigeria as a strong contributor to national development through academic excellence, innovation and strategic international collaboration,” he said.
The visit builds on earlier engagements between the Swedish Embassy and the university’s Directorate of International Collaborations. In August 2025, a delegation led by the embassy’s Head of Political and Trade Section, Fredrik Ahsberg, held preliminary talks with the institution.

In her remarks, Ambassador Westerholm expressed appreciation for the reception and highlighted the longstanding diplomatic ties between Nigeria and Sweden.
“This year marks 65 years of diplomatic relations between Sweden and Nigeria. Education remains central to national development, and partnerships such as this can deliver meaningful impact for both institutions and countries,” she said.

She noted that sustained collaboration in education, research and innovation would strengthen bilateral relations and expand opportunities for students and faculty.
The high point of the visit was the presentation of a portrait of the ambassador by the Vice Chancellor on behalf of the university. The delegation was later hosted to a luncheon and a group photograph session.
Members of the Swedish delegation included Fredrik Ahsberg; Jasmine Osueke, Political and Trade Affairs Officer; Nathalie Sundelin and Oscar Nwokeji of Global Wissen Consult; and industrialist Salami Muyideen.

The Vice Chancellor was joined by principal officers and senior academics of the university, including the Deputy Vice Chancellors, Registrar, University Librarian, Director of International Collaborations, deans and heads of key academic units.
