As the world marked International Workers’ Day, also known as May Day, the Executive Chairman of Udenu Local Government Area, Aka Eze Aka, issued a heartfelt message of solidarity and appreciation to all workers in the LGA and beyond. In a statement released to commemorate the day, the Chairman saluted the dedication, resilience, and sacrifice of the Nigerian worker, with a special focus on those who drive development within Udenu.

Aka traced the historical roots of Workers’ Day to the global labour movement, recalling the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago, where workers demanded fair working conditions. He, however, also emphasized the local context, referencing the historic Coal Miners’ Revolt in Enugu—a key moment in Nigeria’s labour history that symbolizes courage and resistance against colonial exploitation.

“Our own history is rich with a proud legacy of labour activism,” the Chairman stated. “We remember with reverence the brave Nigerian workers—our own brothers and fathers—who stood up against injustice in the coal mining fields.”

Recognizing the pivotal role of workers in the local development agenda, the Chairman commended professionals across sectors including education, healthcare, agriculture, public service, and the private sector. He acknowledged their contribution as the backbone of Udenu’s progress, affirming that their efforts do not go unnoticed.

“From teachers and healthcare providers, to farmers, artisans, civil servants, and private sector operatives — your daily sacrifices fuel our progress. I see your efforts. I feel your struggles. And I deeply value your resilience,” he stated.

The Workers’ Day message also underscored the commitment of the Local Government to improving the working conditions and welfare of its workforce. The Mayor highlighted the alignment of Udenu’s development goals with the broader vision of Enugu State’s Governor, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, whose administration he praised for laying a foundation for sustainable livelihoods and innovation-driven governance.

“Under the fatherly affection and visionary leadership of His Excellency, Dr. Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, we are laying new foundations for sustainable livelihoods, innovation-driven public service, and people-focused development,” he said.

Chairman Aka reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparency, inclusiveness, and sustained empowerment for workers in Udenu. He assured residents that the future of work in the Local Government Area will be anchored on respect, welfare enhancement, and the enterprising spirit of the people.

He concluded with a call for renewed commitment to the shared ideals of equity, dignity, and collective progress.

“Let this May Day inspire renewed faith in our collective mission — to build a Udenu where every hand is engaged, every voice is heard, and every worker is valued,” the Chairman concluded.

The statement has been met with positive reactions across the LGA, as local workers expressed appreciation for the recognition and renewed hope in the promises of improved welfare and governance.

International Workers’ Day is celebrated annually on May 1 to honour the achievements and contributions of workers globally. In Nigeria, the day is recognized with public events, rallies, and messages of solidarity from Leaders across all levels of government.

For the people of Udenu, this year’s celebration is not only a reflection of global labour struggles but also a reaffirmation of local resilience and the continuing quest for inclusive development under the humble stewardship of Aka Eze Aka.
