Today, Saturday February 21, 2026, Opi community in Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State witnessed an extraordinary outpouring of solidarity, culture, and high-profile presence as eminent personalities from across Enugu North Senatorial Zone and beyond gathered to honour the memory of the Late Jonas Chukwuemeka Ugwu and console his widow and family.
Popularly described by loved ones as gentle, Jonas Ugwu died on Friday, January 9, 2026, after a brief illness. He was 59 years old.
Jonas, the son of Late Chief Simeon Ugwu of Owerre Ogbozalla Village, is remembered as a devoted husband, brother, uncle and in-law whose life revolved around family and community.

His burial/funeral ceremony, which drew a cross-section of political leaders, traditional rulers, academia, socio-cultural groups and party faithful, transcended a mere funeral ceremony. It became a grand convergence of influence, compassion, and communal strength, a pointer to the respect the deceased commanded and the depth of relationship fostered by his in-laws.
