Bishop Syukur, 62-year-old Indonesian Franciscan Bishop of the Diocese of Bogor has expressed his wish not to be created a cardinal in the upcoming Consistory by Pope Francis on December 7, 2024. His humble reason is that he wishes “to continue his personal growth “in service to the Church and the people of God and to further deepen his priestly life”. In other words, he is satisfied with the level he has attained to serve the people of God as a priest and a Bishop and doesn’t wish to get a higher and exalted title as a cardinal. It’s worthy of mentioning that Bishop Paskalis Bruno Syukur was appointed Bishop by Pope Francis on November 21, 2013, after serving as Provincial of the Order of Friars Minor in Indonesia from 2001 to 2009.
With this recent development, the number of cardinals to receive the red hat from the Holy Father on December 7, 2024 will be 20 instead of 21.
