BREAKING: The Founding Bishop of Nsukka Diocese passes on at 89

The Emeritus Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, Rt. Rev. Dr. Francis O. Okobo, has passed away this morning after a prolonged illness.

A brief statement signed by the Diocesan Secretariat signed by Rev. Fr. Amuluche Greg NNAMANI. read:
“Msgr/Frs., It is with deep pain and sorrow, yet with a total submission to the will of the Almighty God and a firm hope in the resurrection of the dead, that I announce the sad news of the passing onto glory of our Bishop Emeritus, Most Rev. Francis Emmanuel Ogbonnia Okobo. He died this morning, 29th August 2025 at the Niger Foundation Hospital, Enugu. Further information over this sad event will be communicated to you later. May his soul rest in peace. Amen.”

Bishop Okobo was the pioneer bishop of the Diocese, serving from 1991 to 2014. Born in Lejja, present Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu State, on November 04, 1936, he was ordained a priest on June 04 1966, and a bishop on 6th January 1991. During his tenure, he led the Church with dedication, fostering consistent spiritual growth and strengthening the faith of the community. He retired on April 13 2013 after 23 years as Chief Shepherd of Nsukka.
