The atmosphere at the departure wing of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport was charged with post-convention excitement. Delegates, party faithful, and supporters moved in clusters, some exchanging pleasantries, others still chanting victory songs that had echoed through the convention grounds just hours before.
Amid the bustle, the Chairman of Udenu LGA, Aka Eze Aka, stood out; calm, approachable, and visibly satisfied. Just as he prepared to proceed for boarding, he was approached by two reporters from The Concourse Media.
What followed was an impromptu but deeply insightful conversation.

Good morning, Mr. Chairman. We appreciate you granting us this quick interview. You just concluded participation in the 8th APC National Convention. What is your general assessment of the event?
Aka Eze Aka:
(Smiles, adjusting his cap slightly)
Thank you very much. As you can see, I don’t have much time here, but briefly, let me say in all honestly, that I would describe the convention as historic, well organized, and truly reflective of democratic maturity. What we witnessed goes beyond a political gathering to a reaffirmation of unity within the party.
For the first time in a long while, you could see consensus, and mutual respect, guiding the entire process. That, for me, is the biggest takeaway.

Many observers have described the emergence of the new National Working Committee as seamless. Would you agree that this sets a new standard in Nigeria’s political landscape?
Aka Eze Aka:
Absolutely. It sets a very high standard. The peaceful emergence of leaders, especially with broad consultations across all levels, shows that internal democracy is taking root.
You see, democracy is not just about elections… it’s about trust. And what happened here has strengthened trust within our party. It sends a strong signal to Nigerians that the APC is still committed to taking the lead not just politically, but institutionally.

Sir, your own State delegates were led by Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah. How would you describe his role and leadership throughout the process?
Aka Eze Aka:
(Nods approvingly)
Governor Mbah’s leadership, as always, was exceptional, focused, strategic, and unifying. From the Ward Congresses to the national convention, he ensured inclusivity and fairness.
He didn’t just lead; he coordinated, he listened, and most importantly, he built consensus. That’s why Enugu delegates were so united. You could see the confidence in our ranks.
And let me also say this clearly, his style of leadership is one that fosters stability. That’s why many of us are confident about the future, both for the party and governance in Enugu State.
The Concourse Media:
We saw a lot of jubilation from Enugu delegates, especially at the airport upon arrival earlier. What do you think fueled that excitement?
Aka Eze Aka:
(Laughs softly)
Well, victory always comes with joy. But beyond that, it was the sense of belonging. Our people felt carried along in the process.
Also, the emergence of leaders like Dr. Ben Nwoye as Deputy National Chairman (South) gave our people a sense of pride. It’s not just about positions, it’s about representation and recognition.
And of course, there is strong support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Mbah. The songs you heard were expressions of confidence and hope.

Speaking of President Tinubu, how would you assess his leadership so far, especially in relation to the party’s direction?

Well, like our Governor said in his interview at the convention ground, President Tinubu is a seasoned democrat. His leadership is bold and reform-driven. Yes, reforms come with challenges, but they are necessary for long-term growth.
Within the party, he has provided direction and stability. You can see that in how the convention was conducted, orderly, purposeful, and inclusive.
For me, he is laying the foundation for a stronger Nigeria, and I believe history will be kind to his administration.

There are already conversations about 2027. From your perspective, how prepared is the party for the next general elections?
Aka Eze Aka:
(Pauses briefly, then speaks with emphasis)
Very prepared. What we have done with this convention is to strengthen the foundation.
At the State level, Governor Mbah has already demonstrated capacity in governance, and that naturally builds public confidence. At the national level, President Tinubu is setting the tone.
So, when you look at the structure, from wards to the national leadership, it is solid. That’s why I say the coast is clear. With continuity in leadership and sustained performance, 2027 looks very promising.

You were also present at the South East Zonal Congress hosted in Enugu. Can you share your experience there?
Aka Eze Aka:
Yes, I was there, and it was equally peaceful and well-organized. Hosting it at the Multipurpose Hall of Hotel Presidential showed capacity and readiness.
Gov. Mbah worked closely with other APC Governors from the South East to ensure everything went smoothly. That level of collaboration is what we need more of in Nigerian politics.

Finally, sir, on a personal note, what does this convention mean for you as a grassroots leader?
Aka Eze Aka:
For me, it is encouraging. It shows that the voice of the grassroots still matters. That’s why you saw large number of Udenu APC members who turned up for the convention in solidarity with the leadership of the party at both the State and national levels.
As Chairman of Udenu LGA, my responsibility is to translate these high-level decisions taken at the convention into tangible benefits for our people. And with the kind of leadership we now have, I am confident we will achieve more.
