The Nigerian Medical Laboratory Science community has rolled out glowing tributes in honor of Prof. Sunday Etukudo, the current Provost of the Federal College of Medical Laboratory Science, Jos, as he marks his birthday.
Quoting Ralph Waldo Emerson, veteran American essayist, the 15th National President of the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), Dr. Casmir Ifeanyi, described Prof. Etukudo as “a man whose life exemplifies usefulness, honor, and compassion.”

For over three decades, Prof. Etukudo has remained a towering figure in the profession, beginning from his years as Registrar of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) to his current leadership of the country’s premier College of Medical Laboratory Science. His career, colleagues say, has been defined by dignity, vision, and advocacy for the advancement of the profession.
“Prof. Etukudo is not just a leader by title, but a mentor whose generosity has opened doors for countless young scientists,” Dr. Ifeanyi said. “Many thriving Medical Laboratory Scientists today proudly trace their growth to his guidance.”
Aside from his leadership roles, Prof. Etukudo has distinguished himself as a prolific researcher, contributing significantly to medical knowledge and healthcare policy development in Nigeria. He has also worked closely with government and institutions, lending his expertise to strengthen the nation’s healthcare system.
Those close to him also highlight his character outside the public sphere. Known as a devoted husband and father, he has successfully balanced professional excellence with deep personal values, earning respect not only as a professional icon but also as a family man.
Dr. Ifeanyi summed up the tributes by calling him “a great promoter, legend, and ambassador of Medical Laboratory Science in Nigeria.”
As he celebrates another year, colleagues, mentees, and admirers across the country have joined in wishing Obong Etukudo long life, good health, and continued strength to inspire future generations.
